why would the honda car dealers charge 900+ USD for timing belt packages and the local shop 200?

is the timing belt package from honda dealers better than local shops? do they do more, or is it just 700$ more for quality assurance. That would suck!

$200 will probably be just the belt itself. $900 will include all the wear parts run by the timing belt including the water pump. If your local garage changes just the belt then you are taking a chance. I would recommend to get the price from the local
