Why do car and truck manufactures make brake rotors so thin now?

I remember back when you could have your rotors turned 4 or 5 times before you had to have them replaced, now it's like you have to replace them on your first brake change. I don't know about you, but I smell a rat here.
its called wear out fast replace fast.
